Dane Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo) won the eleventh stage of the Tour de France on Wednesday. Thanks to tactical harassment from his team, he especially made Tadej Pogacar, the big loser of yellow, give in. Frenchman Romain Bardet recovers second place in the general classification.

It was announced as the queen stage of the Tour de France 2022. The 11th stage between Albertville and the Col du Granon kept all its promises on Wednesday July 13. The Jumbo-Visma raced the 151.7 kilometer stage and was finally rewarded in the final kilometres. On the slopes of Granon, Tadej Pogacar, the yellow jersey who seemed almost untouchable since Copenhagen, finally cracked on an offensive from Jonas Vingegaard. The Dane did it twice by winning the stage and taking the jersey.

Before this stage, the Tour de France had only taken the Col du Granon once. It was in 1986 and the stage went down in history as the last time Bernard Hinault, the last French winner on the Grande Boucle, wore the yellow jersey. This 2022 edition will perhaps remain like the one where Tadej Pogacar, after two consecutive coronations, for the first time showed his flaws and lost the yellow jersey.

The Jumbo-Visma of Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic presented themselves with a knife between their teeth, determined to remove the yellow jersey from the Slovenian. First part of his plan: place Christophe Laporte and Wout Van Aert in the breakaway of the day to serve as support at the key moment of the stage.

Then, it was a question of thinning the peloton 67 kilometers from the finish to allow the leaders of the Jumbo-Visma, Vingegaard and Roglic, to isolate themselves in the lead with Tadej Pogacar and Geraint Thomas. In the first slopes of the Galibier, the two team members thus embarked on a game of harassment against their opponents. But in vain: the young Slovenian resumed their attacks one by one.

Teamwork

If the group of favorites is reconstituted in the descent, it is Wout Van Aert’s turn to break away from the breakaway to give his leaders a hand. In the valley between the Galibier and the Granon, he melted the gap with the head of the race then let Primoz Roglic put in a beating to put Pogacar in difficulty. Jonas Vingegaard only has to put the finishing touches to this collective masterpiece. At 5 kilometers, his attack is sharp and takes down the leader in full failure. the latter grants him almost 3 minutes.

Note that the French have distinguished themselves in this stage. Warren Barguil, the last survivor of the breakaway, believed for a long time that he could win before weakening on the last slopes. Romain Bardet seemed the fittest outside the Jumbo-Visma and took third place. This allows him to take second place in the general classification. David Gaudu, for his part, remained hidden at the back all along before making a good end to the stage and finishing fifth.

It now remains to be seen how Tadej Pocagar, double winner of the Tour, will react for the French national holiday when the Tour will tackle another of its monuments: the 21 bends of Alpe d’Huez.
