New suspension for doping in athletics. The Ethiopian Zerfe Wondemagegn, specialist in middle-distance running, tested positive for EPO. “The Athletics Integrity Unit has provisionally suspended Zerfe Wondemagegn (Ethiopia) for presence/use of a prohibited substance (EPO),” the organization said in a short statement. The hormone, which increases the production of red blood cells and is therefore believed to improve sports performance, was detected in the analysis of a sample carried out during a doping control.

Fourth ahead of Alice Finot in Budapest

At the end of August in Budapest (Hungary), the athlete, aged only 21, finished in fourth place at the World Athletics Championships in the 3,000m steeplechase event.

At the foot of the podium, behind the Bahraini athlete Winfred Mutile Yavi (8′54″29) and two Kenyans, Chepkoech (8′58″98) and Faith Cherotich (9′00″69), Wondemagegn was ahead of the Frenchwoman Alice Finot, finally fifth and author of a new French record in the discipline in 9′06″15. The Ethiopian also finished eighth at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
