Massachusetts Organizations Receive Funding to Combat Rising Food Insecurity in Lynn
A surge in food insecurity across Massachusetts, particularly in the city of Lynn, has prompted a wave of philanthropic support aimed at bolstering vital resources for struggling families. Recent grants, distributed through the United Response Fund, will provide critical assistance to local organizations working on the front lines of this growing crisis.
A senior official stated that access to food is an essential component of good health, and disruptions to programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) have far-reaching consequences for community wellbeing. The Atrius Health Equity Foundation is committed to advancing health equity and partnered with United Way to address the urgent needs of Massachusetts households.
Addressing Immediate Needs in Lynn
The latest round of funding is being allocated to eight key organizations within the Lynn community: Boys & Girls Club of Lynn, Building Audacity, Good Hope Inc, LEO Inc., Lynn Community Health, Inc., My Brother’s Table, New American Association of Massachusetts, and Pathways, Inc, all operating under the Lynn Rapid Response Network. These groups are uniquely positioned to provide direct support to individuals and families experiencing hardship.
“When we talk about food insecurity at the scale we currently see in Lynn, it’s easy to get lost in numbers and forget the real human stories and the panic and suffering people feel when they’re unable to feed themselves or their families,” said Dianne Kuzia Hills, Executive Director at My Brother’s Table. She emphasized that the recent delays in SNAP benefit distribution significantly increased anxiety among families, and that the grant money will provide a crucial safety net.
United Way’s Ongoing Commitment to Food Security
This latest investment builds upon previous efforts by United Way of Massachusetts Bay, which had already awarded $30,000 to three Lynn-based organizations: Centerboard, Greater Lynn Senior Services, Inc., and Lynn Housing and Neighborhood Development (LHAND). This demonstrates a sustained commitment to addressing the root causes of food insecurity and supporting long-term solutions.
The combined funding represents a significant step towards mitigating the impact of economic challenges on vulnerable populations. The organizations receiving these grants are expected to leverage the resources to expand their services, reach more families in need, and advocate for policies that promote food security for all.
The ongoing collaboration between foundations, non-profits, and community leaders underscores the importance of a coordinated response to ensure that no one in Massachusetts goes hungry.
