Melbourne: World number one Rafael Nadal has won the Australian Open tennis tournament. Nadal defeated British player Jack Draper 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 in a four-set fight in the first round yesterday. In the women’s category, Iga Schwamtek, the first seed, beat Yule Niemeyer 6-4, 7-5 in the first round. Sixth seed Maria Zachary defeated Chinese star Yue Yuan 6-1, 6-4. Seventh seed American Coco Gough defeated Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova by the same score.
Former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova overcame a tough challenge from Belgian Alison van Uttivanck in the first round. Kvitova’s victory was 7-6, 6-2. Victoria Azarenka defeated Sophia Kane 6-4, 7-6 in the first round. British prospect Emma Raducanu advanced to the second round with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Germany’s Tamara Korpasch.
Kyrgios retreated
Nick Kyrgios, one of the superstars in men’s singles, withdrew due to injury just before the start of the Australian Open. The injury is in the knee. Kyrgios was training with Novak Djokovic the other day.
