Thai authorities revealed that the autopsy carried out on the remains of surgeon Edwin Arrieta revealed that he died after being slit by the young Spanish chef Daniel Sancho. This was confirmed by the number two of the Thai police, Surachate Hakparn, investigator in charge of solving this crime.
“We already have the definitive results of the autopsy. They first quarreled, according to the evidence, at the scene (of the crime). Sancho has been detained since he confessed to murdering the doctor Arrieta and while the investigation process against him progressed, with which the Thai police hope to hand down his sentence.
However, this Tuesday, it had already been concluded that the death of the 44-year-old man was not an accident, but that it was premeditated, this was confirmed by the investigative team during a press conference. It was believed that he had stabbed and dismembered him.
“We have consulted with the prosecutor about some of the evidence and it is strong enough to charge him with premeditated murder, which carries the death penalty,” Hakparn said. Although it is still uncertain whether the Thai courts will apply the maximum sentence to him, he will be sentenced to life imprisonment.
The report will be delivered by the investigators to the Prosecutor’s Office, and it will be this who decides, during the trial, what will be the penalty that the accused must face.
“We have enough evidence for a court to convict him. This was not an accident, I wanted to kill him because there was a purchase of knives and an axe,” Thai police deputy director Surachate Hakparn told national and international media.
“The reason for the murder is that Daniel no longer wanted to have sexual relations with Edwin,” he explained when presenting the conclusions of the investigation to the press. “It was not an accident, there was preparation,” she insisted.
Under Thai law, premeditated murder can carry a death sentence, although the Asian kingdom rarely applies these sentences (the last execution dates back to 2018).
Arrieta’s family does not want the death penalty
Arrieta’s family, for religious reasons, opposes this punishment. “But we do want an exemplary sentence, it could even be life imprisonment,” Miguel González, legal representative of the relatives, explained to AFP.
The 29-year-old defendant, the son and grandson of well-known Spanish actors, confessed to having murdered and dismembered the 44-year-old Colombian plastic surgeon on the Thai tourist island of Koh Pha Ngan.
On August 5, he was detained by the police and is currently in a prison on the neighboring island of Koh Samui in solitary confinement as a precautionary measure to prevent covid-19 from entering the prison.
After his arrest, he accompanied the investigators to different places on the tourist island to show them where he had disposed of his victim’s body parts.
Based on the DNA evidence, the crime scene and the images that capture Sancho buying the tools to dismember his victim, the police concluded that the Spaniard committed the crime without help.
“From the crime scene and the DNA tests we found that only one man was involved: Daniel,” the police officer explained.
“There were two knives and an axe. The evidence we have against him made Daniel confess,” she added.
The case has caused rivers of ink in Colombia and Spain, where the image of the confessed murderer with the appearance of a Californian surfer monopolizes the front pages of the country’s media.
The young man, who had taken his first steps as a cook, is the son of Rodolfo Sancho, star of the popular television series “El ministerio del tiempo”, and grandson of another well-known actor, Sancho Gracia, who died in 2012.
