According to him, it is expected that in the coming years, energy production from renewable sources in Azerbaijan will reach 10 gigawatts. “Firstly, it will be possible to save on gas used to produce electricity and send it for export. An agreement was also reached on the supply of electricity both to Turkey and to several European countries through a line that will be laid along the bottom of the Black Sea. As a result of these efforts, the third largest export direction after oil and gas exports can be formed. But this requires large investments in infrastructure,” the expert said.
He noted that last year, electricity production was in first place in the country’s non-oil sector. “Over $402 million worth of electricity was exported. Electricity accounted for 12.2 percent of our non-oil exports. For comparison, in 2022 we exported $121.6 million worth of electricity. That is, electricity exports increased by more than 3.3 times “. Our country exports electricity mainly to Georgia and Turkey. Last year, the largest solar power plant in the Caspian region and the CIS was built in Garadagh. Construction was jointly financed by the Abu Dhabi Development Fund, the Asian Development Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA),” Karimli added.
