Three Martys for One Night: ‘Back to the Future’ Musical Celebrates 40th Anniversary with Unique Performance

A special performance of the hit West End musical Back to the Future will feature three actors portraying the iconic role of Marty McFly in a single evening on December 3rd at the Adelphi Theater. This unprecedented event marks the 40th anniversary of the original film’s release and promises a unique experience for fans.
A Trio of Time Travelers
The performance will see Caden Brauch, the current star of the show, share the stage with former leads Olly Dobson and Ben Joyce. The evening will unfold with Joyce taking the stage as the teenage time-traveler, followed by Brauch for the middle section, and culminating with Dobson finishing the role. All three actors will then join forces for a performance of the beloved finale, “Back in Time.”
“Originating the role of Marty is undeniably the highlight of my career,” Dobson stated. “To be stepping back into his shoes for one night only is super exciting.” Dobson originally performed the part at the Manchester Opera House in 2020 and during the Adelphi’s 2021 West End premiere, a launch delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Joyce echoed the sentiment, saying, “It’s such a thrill to return to this production. I’m so excited to perform alongside both Olly and Caden – it’s not often you get three Martys on one stage!”
Award-Winning Performances and Star Cameos
Dobson’s portrayal of Marty earned him an olivier Award nomination for best actor in a musical, while Joyce received a WhatsOnStage award nomination for best takeover. Brauch assumed the role earlier this year,continuing the legacy of the celebrated character.
The production has also seen recent high-profile guest appearances.Television personality Gok Wan made a cameo as Principal Strickland on October 21st, coinciding with “Back to the Future Day” – the date Marty travels to the future in Back to the Future Part II. The original film famously employed visual trickery to allow Michael J. Fox to appear alongside himself in a scene featuring Marty’s future son.
A Trend of All-Star musical Events
This unique performance aligns with a growing trend of bringing together past performers for special musical events. Similar celebrations have included a 2024 West End gala for The Lion King featuring five actors who have played Rafiki across Europe,and Les Misérables‘ 40th birthday celebration in October,wich featured performances by stars such as Patti LuPone and Michael Ball. Looking ahead, Kerry Ellis, Louise Dearman, and Rachel Tucker – all former Elphabas from Wicked – are set to tour together next year with a concert entitled Gravity, showcasing songs from their careers.
