Backyard Sports Franchise Revives Nostalgia with Re-Releases and Expands into New Storytelling Territories
Meta Description: Playground Productions revives classic Backyard Sports games and announces an animated special and new title, signaling a major expansion for teh beloved franchise.
Playground productions concluded its initial re-release campaign of classic Backyard sports titles on Thursday with the availability of Backyard Basketball ’01 and Backyard Hockey ’02. Both games are available for free on Steam, with Backyard Basketball ’01 also accessible on mobile app stores. This marks a significant step for the company as it shifts focus toward entirely new projects in the coming year.
The re-releases represent a successful effort to bring back cherished titles after Playground Productions secured the necessary intellectual property rights in 2024. A unique challenge faced by the developers was the complete lack of original source code, necessitating a full re-growth of each game. Currently, all six classic titles – Baseball ’97, Baseball ’01, Football ’99, Soccer ’98, Basketball ’01, and Hockey ’02 – are bundled together on Steam for $36. The company plans to continue updating these games and expanding their availability to additional platforms. On Thursday, Soccer ’98 also became available for free download on both iOS and Android app stores.
Beyond the re-releases, Playground productions is actively expanding the Backyard Sports universe into new media. An animated special, titled Sticky Situation, is slated to debut in January, featuring the voice talents of Tiffany Haddish, Arturo Castro, and Ego Nwodim. Haddish will voice Kiesha Phillips, Castro will portray Pablo Sanchez, and Nwodim will play Stephanie Morgan. The special will initially premiere at Dave & Buster’s locations before becoming available on YouTube. Executives are also exploring the possibility of a fully scripted series based on the game’s characters.
The Backyard Hockey ’02 re-release boasts an updated roster including former NHL stars from the original game, such as Martin Brodeur, Mike Modano, Joe Thornton, and Jarome Iginla. Developers also added additional retired NHL players who were not featured in the original version, including Chris Chelios and Jeremy Roenick. Backyard Basketball ’01 prominently features Lisa Leslie, a trailblazing athlete who was among the first women included in a video game.”That game was one of my favorites as a kid,” a senior official stated, highlighting the nostalgic appeal of the franchise. The inclusion of female athletes is notably noteworthy, given that women now comprise 52% of U.S. gamers, and the Backyard Sports series has consistently emphasized gender inclusivity on its teams.
Looking ahead to 2026, playground Productions CEO Lindsay Barnett stated, “2026 has a lot of new and exciting things in store.” Barnett emphasized that while the retro aspect will remain vital, the company intends to venture into new storytelling avenues within the Backyard Sports universe. The first wholly new game is expected to launch later in 2025, drawing inspiration from the elements that have captivated fans for over 25 years, though specific details remain undisclosed.
