Genetically transforming conventional bacteria into tumor DNA biodetectors is the technique developed and tested on mice by American and Australian researchers. Their method relies on the natural ability of bacteria to produce new proteins by collecting DNA circulating around them. Scientists have modified the genome of bacteria Acinetobacter baylyi to encourage them to integrate as a priority the pieces of DNA from colorectal tumors that they come across during their journey through the digestive tract. They also ensured that these bacteria could no longer be destroyed by a type of antibiotic when they integrated tumor DNA. Administered to sick mice and healthy mice, the bacteria were then recovered…
