A Singaporean man claims he was misled into purchasing Adidas running shoes believing thay were suitable for badminton, sparking a month-long dispute with teh retailer over a refund or exchange. The incident highlights potential issues with franchise retail practices and consumer rights regarding product suitability.
A customer, identified as Mr. Hock, reported that his wife purchased a pair of Adidas Ultraboost shoes on Nov. 14, 2024, at the Waterway Point mall. Initially, he did not use the shoes immediately, as his existing footwear was still serviceable. However, after several months, he was informed by a fellow badminton player that the shoes were not designed for the demands of the sport.
Revelation and Initial Complaint
“But after a few months, somebody told me, ‘Hey, bro, these are not suitable for badminton,'” Mr. Hock recounted. He afterward confirmed online that the Ultraboost model is specifically engineered for running. On Oct.9, he visited the Adidas outlet too seek clarification.
According to Mr. Hock, the initial response from the store attributed the issue to a franchise arrangement at the time of purchase, with a promise to investigate. he returned on Oct. 16, only to be told by another manager that they would again check the matter and inquired about his desired resolution. “I told them one-to-one exchange or a refund because they were cheating,” he stated.
Escalating Frustration and Lack of Resolution
Further visits on Oct.23 and Oct. 30 yielded no satisfactory outcome. On Oct. 23, staff suggested an exchange for jogging shoes, wich Mr. Hock declined, stating, “I don’t jog.” They then indicated they would contact Adidas’ main office for guidance. Though, on Oct.30, the outlet claimed to have not received a response from the main office.
Mr. Hock then proactively contacted Adidas Singapore directly, only to discover that the main office had not received any communication from the Waterway Point outlet. This discrepancy led him to question the integrity of the data he was receiving. “So I should trust who?” he asked.
Adidas Return Policy and Consumer Rights
Adidas Singapore maintains a return policy allowing for full refunds on most items within 30 days of purchase, provided the items are unused, in original condition with tags, and in their original packaging. However, exchanges are generally not permitted. This policy raises questions about the recourse available to Mr. Hock, given the time elapsed since the initial purchase and the fact that the shoes were used, albeit unknowingly for an unsuitable activity.
The case underscores the importance of retailers providing accurate product information and ensuring staff are knowledgeable about their products.
The situation remains unresolved as of today, leaving Mr. Hock seeking a fair resolution to what he believes was a mis-selling incident.
