A growing trend towards mindful partying is taking hold in Bali, with the weekly Udara Sunday Festival offering a vibrant, alcohol-free alternative to the island’s bustling beach club scene. The festival, held at the Udara Bali Yoga Detox and Spa, draws a crowd of over 200 people seeking connection, energy, and a unique spiritual experience.
A Sanctuary for Mindful Connection
Westerners between the ages of 18 and 50, arrive dressed in a range of styles – from flowing hippie attire to activewear and swimsuits – all united by a shared sense of positivity. What sets this event apart is its commitment to a substance-free surroundings; alcohol, smoking, and even mobile phones are prohibited on the premises.
“It’s clubbing for spiritual people,” one attendee shared, while another described it as “clubbing for teetotallers.” This unique approach fosters a sense of authenticity and connection, allowing participants to fully immerse themselves in the experience.
A Day of Wellness and Connection
The Udara Sunday Festival is more than just a dance party. The day begins at 9:00 AM with a selection of five workshops and classes. Four of these focus on holistic wellness practices, including yoga, meditation, quantum breathwork – a technique combining conscious breathing and sound healing – and rebirthing breathwork, designed to release trauma through continuous, circular breathing. A unique offering is “fascial manoeuvres by Human Garage,” a workshop utilizing slow movements and deep breathing to release tension in the fascia, the connective tissue throughout the body.
The energy builds with the dance party, commencing at 10:30 AM, followed by a “sound healing journey” at midday. Participants lie on yoga mats and surrender to a carefully curated soundscape of gongs, bongos, classical guitars, vocals, and traditional Indonesian instruments. The day culminates in a “celebration of life,” a communal practice of gratitude, connection, and positive energy sharing.
A Higher Energy Without artificial Aids
The udara experience is housed within a stunning three-story, open-sided circular building constructed from natural materials, reflecting an Indigenous design. The resort itself boasts four open-air yoga studios,a day spa,a water healing pool,a finnish sauna,a meditation cave, herbal steam rooms,a pool,an organic restaurant, and guest rooms – creating a fully integrated wellness retreat.
Tim, the festival’s DJ, originally from Germany, believes the alcohol-free environment elevates the experience. “It’s much better than a regular dance party as people come here without judgment, without drugs and without alcohol, young or old, just to dance. It is indeed so good for the body and soul,” he stated. He further noted that the energy levels often surpass those found at larger, conventional dance events like Tomorrowland, attributing this to the absence of artificial stimulants. “The people don’t need it, they’re loose enough as it is indeed.”
