It should soon disappear from the mouths of teenagers. Bury the puff? Everyone is for it. In May, François Braun, then Minister of Health, said he was in favor; the Prime Minister in September and the doctors, for more than a year. Today, the ban on disposable electronic cigarettes, very popular among young people, is underway. After the unanimous vote of deputies at the beginning of December, the text arrives in the Senate on January 31. It will also have to obtain the approval of the European Commission. “We are rather confident,” says environmentalist MP Francesca Pasquini, at the origin of this transpartisan bill with Michel Lauzzana (Renaissance). We are banking on a ban in the summer. »

But an essential question arises. Prohibit it, okay. But how can we get our children off the puff, when 15% have already used it? At the Alliance Against Tobacco, which campaigned for the ban and referred to “a pediatric epidemic”, the response was not anticipated: “To be honest, we have not collectively questioned this subject, admits its president, Loïc Josseran. Perhaps we have been blinded to the idea of making the puff disappear… But indeed, there is going to be a need. »

Towards an exemption to prescribe patches to minors?

The challenge is there: to identify what proportion of teenagers have become addicted to nicotine and show signs of nervousness, mood disorders and sleep disorders. Especially since many parents risk discovering the pot of roses. “For the moment, there is no support planned,” also responds Gérard Audureau, president of the Demain sera non-smoker association. So no one thought about it. And what about the General Directorate of Health? No answer.

“It’s true that it’s a big problem,” admits Daniel Thomas, cardiologist and spokesperson for the Société francophone de tabacologie. We are going to find ourselves in a paradoxical situation which consists of weaning vapers with tools for smokers. » Except that these patches, gums or chewing gum are not authorized for minors! “It will then be necessary to prescribe them in an exceptional manner,” envisages the cardiologist. The risk is also that these young people will definitively switch to cigarettes. Full support remains to be built. The doctor warns: “We will have to take care of them. »
