Bangkok Urges Public to Get Flu Vaccine as Cases Surge

Bangkok, Thailand – In response to a surge in flu cases during the month of August, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is encouraging residents to receive the flu vaccine. The increase in flu cases has been observed throughout the province since July, and the trend has continued to rise.
Mr. Chatchat Sitthiphan, Governor of Bangkok, revealed the alarming situation, stating that the number of patients has steadily increased since last month. The Bangkok Public Health Service Center is now offering the influenza vaccine to the public. However, the administration is currently reviewing whether to declare the flu outbreak a contagious disease. This decision will be made in consultation with the Communicable Disease Control Committee.
In addition to the flu outbreak, there is growing concern about the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), which primarily affects children under the age of 5. Unfortunately, there is no vaccine available to prevent RSV, so the emphasis is on maintaining good hygiene practices such as handwashing.
Mr. Sunthorn Sunthornchat, Director of the Health Department, provided an update on the outbreak in Bangkok from March to September 15, 2023. He reported that 14 schools, military camps, places of worship, and nursing homes have experienced outbreaks, totaling 17 locations in 11 districts. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported due to these diseases, which can be treated.
To combat the spread of the flu, Thailand has implemented an influenza vaccination program. The National Health Security Office (NHSO) aims to provide vaccination services to 317,650 people in Bangkok. As of the beginning of September, 263,005 individuals, or 83%, have already been vaccinated. Priority is given to children, individuals with chronic diseases, the elderly, and pregnant women. The authorities are working diligently to achieve 100% vaccination coverage as soon as possible.
Although the flu is common during the rainy season, it is not considered a dangerous contagious disease. It primarily affects individuals between the ages of 0 and 16. Access to the influenza vaccine in Bangkok is available through the Paotang application, where appointments can be made. Walk-in services are also offered on a first-come, first-served basis, depending on vaccine availability at the Public Health Service Center. The NHSO has determined that the vaccine can be administered to individuals of all ages, from newborns to the elderly.
