Indian Visa Application Centers in Bangladesh Closed Due to Riots
Dhaka, Bangladesh – August 8, 2024 - All Indian visa application centers in Bangladesh have been closed indefinitely due to ongoing riots and a volatile political situation in the country. Officials have not announced a date for their reopening.
Despite the closure, all Bharat Visa Application Centers will remain open until further notice. Applicants will be notified of the next available application date via SMS. Passports can be collected on working days as notified.
This decision comes a day after several employees of the Indian High Commission and Consulate in Bangladesh, along with their families, were evacuated back to India. Indian diplomats remain in the country, and the embassy itself is functioning.
The violence has also extended to Dhaka Zoo, where attackers hunted and killed animals. Graphic footage of the attack has been released online. A group of rioters stormed the zoo and proceeded to raid and attack caged animals. Hundreds of animals have been confirmed dead within the Bangladesh National Zoo alone.
