BarcelonaBarça had never spent so much money. The club closed the 2022-23 financial year with 1.165 million expenses, 100 more than budgeted. Management and especially Others – a real tailor’s drawer – accounted for almost 40% of the total expenditure, and are the ones that have grown the most if you look at Barça’s numbers over the last fifteen years. The club attributes this to the needs to make the institution work on a day-to-day basis. The bigger the entity and the more revenue it generates, the more money it costs to operate it. In fact, in percentage terms, the Management item is growing more than even the cost of the football staff, one of Barça’s biggest problems in recent years due to the out-of-market salaries that have been paid especially in football and basketball

In the 2011-12 season, for example, Barça had 441 million in expenses: 101 for management, 10.7 for others, 30.8 for non-sporting salaries and the rest, close to 300 million, for the cost of the squads . This year, the figures have grown to 255, 171, 64 and 676 million, respectively. Thus, with respect to total expenses, the four items remain fairly stable except for Others, which has multiplied by 16 in just over a decade.

Sending players off has an impact

The economic vice-president, Eduard Romeu, detailed yesterday the reasons why the Other party shot up to 171 million, 15% of everything the entity spent during the last campaign. Almost half of this money belongs to operations of footballers who are no longer there, farewells that have had a total impact of 100 million on the accounts. According to Romeu, Barça “overloaded” the financial year 22-23 with this money, aware that the levers allowed them to close with a profit, so as not to affect the subsequent years, when no financial engineering or asset sale is planned to be activated . Specifically, losses worth €58 million were recorded for the transfers of footballers such as Alba, Busquets and Griezmann, also of basketball players such as Mirotic and Higgins or for the farewell of Piqué. In addition, the deterioration of players who are on loan meant a cost of 26 million. Romeu, however, pointed out that these 26 million were offset against income, which is why the clubs where the Barça footballers are transferred pay.

Despite the club’s efforts, the backpacks of the players who ended up leaving were not completely emptied on June 30. This new season, Barça will still have to deal with 18.5 million that it owes to footballers who no longer play for Blaugrana and with whom an agreement was not reached.

UEFA wants to put gates on the field for agents

The constant judicial attacks that Barça has had for more than a decade also help to explain the increase in spending: the successive directives have provided large amounts of money for risks and litigation. In the case of Laporta, last year, it included a provision of 37 million, two million more than the amortization of the facilities, an amount that grew because the buildings that were ‘they demolished to make the new stadium.

Romeu also broke down most of the 255 million that Barça spends to run the club. He stopped detailing 6 million that correspond to small expenses. What he did want to make clear is that the 11.6 million paid to footballers’ agents – almost four times more than a year before – is due to a change in UEFA’s criteria, which will limit commissions.
