Turbulence occurred once the landing was complete. Laurent Emmanuelli, considered by the police as the leader of one of the 25 criminal gangs active in Corsica, was arrested Friday morning in Bastia when he got off the plane from Paris, we learned from sources close to the case. He was apprehended by a large gendarmerie force, one of these sources said, confirming information from Corse-Matin.

According to a confidential note from the national police dating from March 2022, the 32-year-old man is considered by the authorities as close to the Moretti brothers and potential “support” for the Orsoni clan in Balagne (Upper Corsica). He was arrested in Morocco in August 2021 and placed in detention with a view to extradition to France “in the context of warrants for murder, extortion and attempted murder”, according to this document.

In May 2019, he was notably suspected of having tried to attack Dominique known as “Mimi” Costa with his 22-year-old right-hand man, Antoine Francisci. The latter was killed that day while driving a buggy in the early morning in Pietralba, about fifteen kilometers from Moltifao, the stronghold of the Costa family, active at the heart of island banditry. He had been shot several times with a shotgun. One of the investigators’ hypotheses was that Dominique Costa had been able to learn of the two men’s plan and that he would have applied a form of “preventive self-defense”, sources close to the investigation indicated in July 2020.

Struggle for influence

This clan war seemed based on a “struggle for spheres of influence between an established group and the rising generation” embodied by Laurent Emmanuelli. It also led to two attempts to settle scores, in February and June 2020, in Île-Rousse. Laurent Emmanuelli, suspected in these cases, was then known for “concealed work, threats, explosive attacks and violation of the legislation on organized gang gaming”, according to these sources.

After the death of his right arm, he was suspected by the authorities of having fled abroad, which his arrest in Morocco subsequently confirmed. His arrest on Friday took place as part of investigations carried out by the Specialized Interregional Jurisdiction (JIRS) of Marseille, responsible for organized crime cases, as well as as part of a judicial investigation by an investigating judge from Bastia. , said a source close to the matter.
