NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Belmont Bruins baseball team suffered a 9-3 defeat at the hands of Western Kentucky on Wednesday night at First Horizon Park. Despite a spirited offensive showing from the top of the Belmont lineup, a decisive surge by the Hilltoppers in the middle innings proved too much to overcome for the Bruins.
The game quickly tilted in Western Kentucky’s favor after a challenging first inning for Belmont starter Sam Heyman. Two hit batters led to two early runs for the Hilltoppers. Heyman was then replaced by Andrew Perry, a move that ultimately marked a turning point in the contest. Western Kentucky capitalized on a series of walks and a crucial two-out, three-run home run by L. Arroyos, extending a manageable 2-0 lead to a commanding 5-0 cushion and shifting the momentum firmly in their favor.
Bruins Offense Sparked by Davis, McMeans
Belmont’s offense showed flashes of promise, led by senior Charlie Davis, who went 2-for-3 on the night, including a triple in the first inning, and later scored a run. Cavan McMeans also contributed with a double as part of a multi-hit performance, providing a spark for the Bruins throughout the evening.
The Bruins managed to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning when Mike Sprockett was hit by a pitch. Belmont continued to apply pressure in the later innings, including an RBI strikeout that allowed a runner to reach first base thanks to a passed ball by Nicholas Stinson, but the early deficit proved insurmountable.
Staff Approach on the Mound for Belmont
Belmont utilized a committee of pitchers on Wednesday night. Cole Kenyon provided a steadying presence in relief, tossing 2.1 innings of one-hit baseball and striking out three Hilltoppers to retain the game within reach during the middle frames. Zane Brown and Brooks McDonnough also contributed scoreless appearances out of the bullpen, working to close out the contest.
Looking Ahead to Illinois State
Belmont will now turn its attention to the start of Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) play, traveling to Normal, Illinois, for a three-game weekend series against Illinois State. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:00 PM on Friday, March 20, at Duffy Bass Field. Historical data between the two teams is available on the Belmont Bruins website.
