Actors Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are set to reunite on screen in The Rip, a new crime thriller from Netflix, promising a high-stakes drama inspired by a true story.
The pair star as Miami police officers at the center of a multi-million-dollar cash seizure, and the newly released trailer hints at a relentless, action-packed ride filled with gunfights, rooftop chases, and breakneck car pursuits.
Affleck, 53, and Damon, 55, not only lead the cast as Detective Sergeant JD Byrne and Lieutenant Dane Dumars, respectively, but also produce the film through their production company, Artists Equity. They are joined by Steven Yeun, known for his role in The Walking Dead, and Teyana Taylor, of One Battle After Another, as fellow members of the Miami-Dade Tactical Narcotics Team who initially discover the massive sum of money—the “rip” that sets the plot in motion.
The trailer features Affleck’s character delivering tense lines like, “If you want to steal this rip, just say it out loud,” and “I don’t trust you right now, and that’s a problem.” The film delves into the fracturing trust within the team following the seizure, exploring themes of integrity and temptation, according to Affleck.
“It begs the question: What do you do when faced with this massive temptation?” Affleck explained. “What does that mean? What’s it like to see that up close? And then also, who do you trust?”
Damon added context to the high-pressure situation, explaining, “In Miami, you have to count the money on-site, so that everybody knows how much is there. They know that it’s almost certainly cartel money that belongs to very dangerous people who are probably going to come get it. They’re on the clock, and they have to start thinking of defending where they are because they can’t just leave.”

This collaboration marks the 14th film project for Affleck and Damon, who first gained widespread recognition for co-writing the Oscar-winning Good Will Hunting in 1997. They founded Artists Equity together in 2022, and The Rip represents the first project resulting from their partnership with Netflix.
The duo last appeared together on screen in the 2023 Nike biopic, Air.
Directed by Joe Carnahan (Narc, Copshop), The Rip is scheduled for release on Netflix on Friday, January 16.
