As live music continues to capture audiences, many attendees at a recent concert expressed a desire to explore the local music scene. From young concert-goers to families and even pet owners, the drive to discover homegrown talent was a common thread.
Discovering New Sounds
The appeal of discovering emerging artists was strong. “We didn’t come here with anyone in mind actually,” shared Benjamin Low, 20, attending with friends. “We were instead curious about local music since more local artists were gaining more traction. It’s quite refreshing to see new musicians in our country.”
However, some were drawn by their favorite performers. Seventeen-year-old Tricia Sit, along with her friend Avril Yap, 17, eagerly awaited local artists. When asked about who they were most excited to see, they exclaimed, “Benjamin Kheng!” The pair also shared their enthusiasm for Desmond Tan, with Sit excitedly recounting, “Desmond Tan waved at me from above, I was up there and he was going to leave and then he looked up.”
Fellow concert attendees, 18-year-old students Shalisa Binte Shafudin, Tang Xin Yu, and Raye Kosasih, were particularly thrilled to catch the dance group D’Kingsman, as well as artists Lovalie and Fariz Jabba.
Amidst the crowd, a lively sound emerged from the mini outdoor stage. Twelve-year-old Lyla Ng, one of the buskers, captivated the audience with her renditions of popular songs like Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk” and Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud,” singing in both Chinese and English.
