World-renowned pianist Seong-Jin Cho said that working as Artist-in-Residence of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (Berlin Philharmonic) for the 2024/25 season was “like paradise.”

According to an interview posted on the Berlin Philharmonic website on the 24th, Cho Seong-jin said, “It is like paradise to be able to design the program the way I want at the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.”

Cho Seong-jin was appointed as the Berlin Philharmonic’s resident musician in November last year. He is the first Korean and the second Asian to do so, following Japanese pianist Mitsuko Uchida.

Accordingly, Seong-Jin Cho will serve as the Berlin Philharmonic’s resident musician throughout the 2024/25 season and will perform a total of 10 performances. He has performed eight times in collaboration with the Berlin Philharmonic, once in solo recital, and once with the Karajan Academy, a musician training institution under the Berlin Philharmonic. The repertoire consists entirely of programs written by Cho Seong-jin himself.

When asked what he thought about his relationship with the Berlin Philharmonic as a resident musician, following his first concerto experience with the Berlin Philharmonic, which began with a collaboration with pianist Lang Lang in 2017, and a Seoul collaboration with Kirill Petrenko in 2023, he said, “I am very interested in the Berlin Philharmonic. “I have a deep respect for him,” he said. “I feel more at ease now than I did six years ago, and I think all members of the Berlin Philharmonic are great musicians and great people.”

Seong-Jin Seong will perform the ‘Piano Concerto’ by Thormis, Shostakovich, and Bruckner in October this year, and the ‘Piano Concerto’ by Hungarian chamber music Brahms, Ligeti, and Bartók in December. In 2025, Janacek’s ‘Fate’, Beethoven’s ‘Piano Concerto’, and Bartok’s ‘Concerto for Orchestra’ will be performed in March and April. Additionally, he will give a recital in April and present Ravel’s ‘Complete Works’.

Regarding the Ravel recital, Cho Seong-jin expressed his expectations, saying, “2025 is the 150th anniversary of Ravel’s birth,” and “celebrating this will be a very wonderful thing.”

A performance with Karajan Academy members is also scheduled in January 2025. This performance will feature Korean composer Shin Dong-hoon’s ‘My Shadow’, Beethoven’s ‘Quintet Concerto for Piano’, and Chopin’s ‘Concerto for Piano and Orchestra’.

Seong-Jin Seong received worldwide attention by winning first place at the Chopin International Piano Competition in 2015. The following year, she signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon, an internationally renowned classical record label.
