The Hérault president justified the choice to call on the former president of the FFR.

Montpellier, bottom of the Top 14, is sinking a little deeper into the crisis after conceding to Bayonne its eighth consecutive defeat (34-19), the second since the arrival at the helm of Bernard Laporte, whistled by Jean’s public -Dauger. Questioned by our colleagues from The team Hérault president Mohed Altrad explained why he called on the former coach of the XV of France and ex-president of the FFR to come to the bedside of the MHR.

«He was the only one who was available and he wanted to do something in this club, explains the businessman. He in turn went to find people who were available. I called Bernard Laporte on a Saturday (the 18th November) and a few hours later his team was formed with Patrice Collazo, Vincent Etcheto and Christian Labit. The next day, they (the coaches) were at the club. All these changes bring a form of instability. We are fighting today.»

Montpellier is owned by businessman Mohed Altrad, who has troubled ties with the former president of the FFR. On December 13, 2022, both were in fact found guilty, at first instance, of having entered into a “corruption pact” (active corruption, influence peddling and abuse of corporate assets), particularly regarding the conditions of attribution of sponsorship of the French XV jersey by the company Altrad (still in place).
