Biden called the elections held in Nicaragua “pantomime”

by time news

The United States does not consider the parliamentary and presidential elections held in Nicaragua to be free or democratic. This was stated by US President Joe Biden, his statement was published on the White House website.

“What Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, organized today was a pantomime of an election that was neither free nor fair, and certainly not democratic,” he said.

Biden pointed out that almost 40 opposition politicians, including seven potential presidential candidates, have been imprisoned in Nicaragua since May under unfounded pretexts, and the participation of political parties was restricted by the authorities, which “falsified” its results long before election day. According to the US President, Ortega and Murillo have long ceased to be popular among the inhabitants of Nicaragua, but now they have lost their “democratic mandate.”

“The Ortega and Murillo family now rule Nicaragua as autocrats, no different from the Somoza family, which Ortega and the Sandinistas fought four decades ago,” he said.
