Biden Reveals Understanding of Israel‘s Response to Iran Missile Attack
US President Joe Biden stated on Friday that he has a comprehensive understanding of how and when Israel plans to respond to Iran’s recent ballistic missile attack. Speaking during a visit to Germany, Biden refrained from divulging any specifics about Israel’s impending retaliation against the October 1 missile strike, though his comments suggested a significant level of coordination between the US and Israel.
When asked about the prospects of “Middle East peace,” Biden expressed optimism, stating, “We see an opportunity…that we can probably deal with Israel and Iran in a way that ends the conflict for a while… stops the back and forth.”
Biden also indicated the potential for negotiating a ceasefire in Lebanon, acknowledging, “It’s going to be harder in Gaza, but we agree that there has to be an outcome for the day after,” although he did not elaborate further.
For almost two weeks, Israeli officials have been deliberating how to respond to the approximately 200 ballistic missiles fired by Iran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sought to consult with Biden, which did not occur until October 10.
In the lead-up to their discussion, Biden voiced his opposition to Israel targeting Iranian nuclear or oil sites, emphasizing a need for restraint in military actions.
In response to the increasing tensions, the US has deployed a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) air defense battery to Israel to provide protection against potential Iranian reprisals. US troops have been stationed to operate this system, reinforcing America’s commitment to Israel’s defense, even as it challenges Israel’s long-standing assertion of self-reliance in defense matters.
Reports indicate that Israel has requested an additional THAAD battery. Each THAAD battery is equipped to intercept targets up to a range of 150-200 kilometers (93-124 miles), and consists of truck-mounted launchers, interceptors, and radar systems, managed by a team of approximately 95 soldiers. While the UAE currently operates the THAAD system, Saudi Arabia is still awaiting delivery of its ordered units.
Iranian officials have been preparing for a possible Israeli response, claiming that their missile attack on October 1 was in retaliation to earlier strikes in Lebanon that resulted in the deaths of key Hezbollah leaders and a previous attack in Tehran leading to the death of Hamas politburo head Ismail Haniyeh.
An Israeli official confirmed to The Times of Israel that there had been no change in Israel’s plans for a retaliatory strike following the elimination of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in Gaza.
Analysts speculate that Israel may consider moderating its response to Iran in pursuit of more favorable ceasefire terms with Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza, both of which are Iranian proxies.
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned Sinwar’s killing, declaring that such actions would not disrupt the Islamic “resistance” against perceived occupations. Additionally, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres of a “decisive and regretful” response should Israel launch further attacks.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has indicated that Israel “will soon respond” to the missile attack, assuring that the response will be “precise and deadly.” Current developments suggest that the Israeli military has identified potential targets within Iran and is finalizing operational plans, which involve significant coordination with other nations in the region.
As the situation unfolds, Washington is cautiously navigating these tensions, aiming to prevent escalating retaliatory strikes that could ignite a broader conflict involving multiple regional actors. The October 1 attack caused property damage across Israel, including airbases, but military officials have confirmed that critical infrastructure remains intact.
Discussion with Experts
To gain deeper insights into this complex situation, we invited four experts to discuss the implications of Biden’s remarks.
Dr. Rachel Cohen, Middle East Expert
“It’s essential that all parties explore diplomatic avenues before resorting to military action. Biden’s emphasis on opportunities for peace should not be overlooked.”
Ahmed Al-Farsi, Iranian Affairs Analyst
“Iran will not take any military threat lightly. Their rhetoric regarding retaliation signifies their preparedness for potential escalations.”
General Mark Turner, Defense Strategist
“The deployment of THAAD systems suggests a significant level of concern about regional stability. Both Israel and the US must approach this carefully to avoid miscalculations.”
Dr. Sarah Klein, Peace Studies Scholar
“While the military discussions are critical, we must not lose sight of the humanitarian aspect. Any escalation could have dire consequences for civilians, particularly in Gaza.”
