Judge Katanji Brown Jackson is the candidate of U.S. President Joe Biden for the position of Supreme Court justice, replacing Liberal Justice Stephen Breyer who has announced he will retire this summer; if her appointment is approved in the Senate, she will be the first black woman to serve in the House Supreme Court The President of the United States announced his decision tonight.
Biden said last month that by the end of February he would announce the appointment of a first black judge to the Supreme Court – one of his promises in the election campaign. Candidates for the Supreme Court must get the approval of the Senate – which is now under the control of the Democrats (50-50, with a decisive vote of Vice President Kamla Harris).
In the U.S. the appointment to the Supreme Court is for life, unless the judges are interested in retiring.
So far, only five women have served as Supreme Court justices, none of whom are black. Of the male judges – only two were black.
Jackson, 51, a Harvard graduate, was appointed a federal judge in the Court of Appeals last year after gaining the support of all 50 Democratic senators, and three other Republican senators. She is seen as having a progressive view, which will give Biden points in the left wing of the Democratic Party.
