US President Joe Biden has told his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky that he looks forward to the day when he welcomes Ukraine to NATO.
“Your courage and determination have been a model for the whole world,” Biden told Zelensky, during their meeting on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Vilnius.
The US president said he understood the Ukrainian leader’s frustration at not getting the help he needed quickly enough. “I promise you that the US is doing everything it can to get what you need,” he assured reporters. “I look forward to the day when we celebrate your official accession to NATO,” he added.
Asked by a reporter today how soon after the war he would like Ukraine to join NATO, Biden replied: “In one hour and 20 minutes.”
