US President Joe Biden announced this evening (Thursday) that he will grant a full amnesty to anyone convicted of possessing marijuana, as part of the administration’s effort to change US policy on the treatment of drugs. He also called on state governors to do the same in the case of civilian possession of marijuana in the state.

“As I have said many times in the past, there is no reason for people to be in prison for possessing or taking marijuana,” Biden said in his announcement. “Incarcerating people for possession of marijuana has ruined the lives of too many people because of conduct that many states allow today. The criminal cases opened for possession of marijuana placed barriers in front of people who wanted to obtain a livelihood, housing, or education.”

According to him, “The time has come to stop this failed policy. There are thousands of people with previous federal convictions for possession of marijuana, who may be denied employment and housing as a result. My actions will help alleviate the consequences of these convictions.”
