The court heard that on the morning of the attack, the victim was permitted to leave her classroom to use the restroom when she encountered the defendant and a friend. The defendant then allegedly “grabbed” the victim and attacked her with a knife, inflicting three cuts to her neck. During the assault, the defendant reportedly shouted at the victim, saying, “die, die b****.”
A fellow student intervened, pushing the defendant away. Following the incident, tutors separated the two pupils. The victim stated there was no prior history between herself and the defendant, though she had been made aware of the threats made against her on social media. A staff member reportedly overheard the accused shouting, “I want to kill you” and “I hate you” during the attack.
Defendant’s Post-Attack Behavior and Statements
The knife used in the attack was recovered from a bin in a school corridor. When questioned by police, the defendant allegedly stated she “wanted to kill” the other pupil and “didn’t want her to survive.” She was subsequently suspended from school and arrested.
A search of the defendant’s diary revealed a chilling entry written after the attack: “Today I tried to stab (the victim) LMAO (Laugh My Ass Off). I stabbed her neck but the f** blade wasn’t sharp enough to cut through. Anyways, she’s still alive, sadly, and I’m permanently excluded. I just want my phone back LOL. That’s all I care about, honestly.” The diary also contained entries expressing a desire for her own parents to be dead.
Further investigation of the defendant’s phone revealed messages to a group chat where she repeatedly discussed killing the victim, even asking a friend to purchase a “sharp pocket knife” and providing a link to one on Amazon. When questioned about her motives, the defendant allegedly responded, “cos I can.” In response to a friend’s comment that the victim had a good chance of survival, the defendant reportedly stated, “Neck five times she will die on the spot.”
Court Accommodations for Young Defendant
Prior to the start of the trial, Justice Christina Lambert KC informed the jury that standard procedural rules would be modified due to the defendant’s age. These accommodations include referring to the defendant by her first name, ensuring she is accompanied by a social worker in court, and allowing her access to toys “to provide her with some comfort.” The judge also instructed barristers to use “simple words” and scheduled regular breaks throughout the proceedings.
