The National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) has released preliminary data on Colombia’s vital statistics for the year 2023, providing a detailed view of the country’s demographic trends in terms of births and non-fetal deaths.

According to the report, during the accumulated year 2023, a total of 510,357 births were registered in Colombia, which marks a significant reduction of 11.0% compared to the previous year. This figure represents the second highest annual reduction in the series (2014-2023), highlighting a downward trend in the number of births in the country.

A notable aspect is that, for the first time in the series of years analyzed, the percentage of cesarean births exceeded spontaneous births. This change in birth pattern is observed in both urban and rural areas, suggesting a transformation in obstetric practices at the national level.

Regarding non-fetal deaths, a total of 265,047 cases were recorded in 2023, which represents a decrease of 7.7% compared to the previous year. Among the main causes of death are ischemic heart diseases, followed by cerebrovascular diseases.

Importantly, infant mortality also saw a significant reduction in 2023, with 1,202 cases recorded, representing a decrease of 18.0% compared to the previous year. However, challenges still persist in terms of gender equity, since 57.4% of deaths correspond to men.

Regarding deaths due to malnutrition, a reduction of 11.7% is observed compared to the previous year, which indicates an improvement in health and nutrition conditions in some areas of the country.

These data provide a comprehensive view of the demographic and health situation in Colombia during the year 2023, and will serve as a basis for the formulation of policies and programs aimed at improving the well-being of the population in the future.
