Latvia’s Bite Latvija Launches Industry-First Cyber Fraud Insurance for All Customers
A new standard in digital security is coming to Latvia, as telecommunications provider Bite Latvija will include cyber fraud insurance for all private clients beginning January 1, 2026. This proactive measure addresses the rapidly escalating threat of online fraud and the increasingly sophisticated tactics employed by cybercriminals.
The move comes as digital fraud in Latvia surges, with criminals employing increasingly aggressive and psychologically manipulative techniques. According to data released by the Financial Industry Association, over 19,000 fraud cases were reported among customers of the country’s four largest banks in the first nine months of the current year, totaling nearly 19 million euros in losses. Alarmingly, nearly half of these incidents involved phone scams.
“Technology alone cannot stop the psychological manipulations of cybercriminals,” stated a senior official at Bite Latvija. “That’s why we’re introducing a new service standard that provides greater protection for citizens against the risks of cyber fraud.”
Rising Tide of Cybercrime Demands Proactive Solutions
The evolving nature of cybercrime is a key driver behind Bite Latvija’s decision. While traditional hacking remains a threat, fraudsters are increasingly focused on directly deceiving individuals through phishing emails, fake calls, fraudulent text messages, and deceptive online storefronts impersonating legitimate government agencies, banks, and police.
To combat this, Bite Latvija’s “Bite Basic Package” will offer cyber fraud protection of up to 1,000 EUR per year to all private customers, without requiring additional contracts. This insurance will cover financial losses stemming from common scams, such as entering payment details on fraudulent websites disguised as legitimate package tracking portals, or purchasing goods from online stores that disappear after a transaction.
However, customers will be required to first report incidents to the State Police and then file a claim with the insurer to activate coverage. The service is being offered in partnership with Compensa Vienna Insurance Group.
A Multi-Layered Approach to Security
Bite Latvija is not relying solely on insurance to protect its customers. The “Bite Basic Package” also includes the company’s existing free security solution, which has already intercepted nearly two million fraudulent calls over the past year and a half by automatically blocking suspicious numbers.
“Cybercrimes in Latvia have become systematic, organized attacks that cause significant losses to citizens every month,” explained a company release. “Therefore, a complex ‘shield’ must be created for customer security, including both technological solutions and additional protection in moments when the attack has already occurred.”
Sanita Kindzule, Head of Partners and Digital Sales Department at ADB Latvian branch of Compensa Vienna Insurance Group, emphasized the growing importance of cyber insurance. “Cyber risk insurance is no longer something special or only for a few – it has become a daily necessity,” she said. “Together with Bite, we have created a solution that helps every customer take care of their digital security quickly, conveniently and accessible.”
Affordable Security for All
The “Bite Basic Package,” priced at 1.98 EUR per month, bundles the cyber fraud insurance with a range of other customer support and security services. These include SIM card replacements, contract re-registrations, access to customer service, technical assistance, and changes to internet addresses or temporary service suspensions – services that previously could cost customers up to 25 EUR individually.
This comprehensive approach signals a significant shift in the telecommunications industry, prioritizing proactive security measures and financial protection for customers in the face of an increasingly dangerous digital landscape.
