A growing number of businesses are reevaluating their participation in Black Friday, and now a Belgian football club is joining their ranks. Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, a top-division team that competed against Toulouse FC in the 2023/2024 Europa League season, has announced it will forgo Black Friday sales this year, opting instead to promote sustainable consumption and support a local charity.
A Stand Against Overconsumption
The decision, announced via an official communiqué, reflects a growing concern over the environmental and social impact of the annual shopping event. Union Saint-Gilloise explicitly cited the overconsumption fueled by deep price reductions as the primary reason for their boycott. Instead of offering discounts, the club is taking a proactive stance to encourage more mindful purchasing habits.
“No reduction will be made during the launch of Black Friday,” a club representative stated, adding, “we will donate 10% of this week’s merchandising sales to the Les Petits Riens organization.” This commitment demonstrates a tangible effort to redirect resources from promotional spending to community support.
Supporting Les Petits Riens Through Sales and Donations
Beyond the financial contribution, Union Saint-Gilloise is actively engaging its fanbase in charitable giving. From November 24 to 28, a dedicated collection point will be established at the Club-House. Additional collection points will be available on the Chaussée de Bruxelles on November 22 during a home match, providing fans with an opportunity to donate clothing to the Les Petits Riens organization. This initiative fosters a sense of collective responsibility and encourages fans to participate in a meaningful way.
A Broader Commitment to Sustainability
This Black Friday boycott isn’t an isolated incident for Union Saint-Gilloise. The club has already demonstrated a commitment to reducing waste and promoting longevity. Since 2023, players have been outfitted with one of three match jerseys for two seasons, a significant departure from the traditional annual jersey release. This move reduces the demand for new merchandise and minimizes textile waste.
The club’s actions signal a broader shift within the sports industry, as organizations increasingly recognize their role in promoting environmental and social responsibility. By prioritizing sustainability over short-term profits, Union Saint-Gilloise is setting a powerful example for other clubs and businesses to follow.
