The Symptom It is one of the most widely used anticoagulant drugs. In fact, it is the most used in Spain, where it is among the five best-selling drugs, according to the Business Federation of Spanish Pharmacists. Contains the active ingredient of acenocumarol, whose main function is to prevent the formation of blood clots. A blood clot occurs when the blood loses its liquidity.

Among the many patients to whom Sintrom is prescribed are people who have suffered a stroke. One of the consequences of suffering a cerebral infarction is the formation of thrombi in some parts of the body, which is why acenocoumarol is one of the best weapons to fight against them.

Despite being a drug more than tested, it can produce several side effects.

The most frequent are hemorrhages, such as nosebleeds, in the gums when brushing the teeth, in urine and feces or when coughing. These abnormalities, which occur in one in ten patients, may also be due to taking more of the medicine than necessary.

The Spanish Medicines Agency (AEMPS) also points out that allergic reactions can occur in the form of a skin rash or itching, although this symptom is not common, since less than 1 person per thousand suffers from it.

Rarer are side effects such as bruising with blisters on the skin, usually affecting the thighs, buttocks, abdomen, chest, or sometimes the toes; bruising or bleeding under the skin; or yellowing of the eyes or skin. According to the AEMPS, these symptoms occur in less than 1 person per ten thousand, so they are classified as ‘very rare‘.

Among other adversities of Sintrom consumption, the less common ones, are unusual hair loss, loss of appetite or, in rare situations, painful skin rashes. This reaction occurs more frequently in patients with chronic kidney disease.

If you suffer any of these mishaps, the AEMPS recommends seeing a doctor immediately. In addition, the entity has drawn up a list of people who should not take Sintrom:

  • Allergic to acenocoumarol, or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
  • People with difficulties to follow the treatment.
  • Patients with blood disorders with a tendency to bleeding or severe bleeding diseases.
  • Patients who are going to undergo major surgical interventions such as operations on the eyes or the brain.
  • Those who have had heavy bleeding surgeries, including dental work
  • Patients with stomach ulcer or intestinal, cerebral or pulmonary hemorrhages.
  • People with serious infections or inflammations in the heart.
