Bo Horvers, a student in group 8 at De hasselbraam primary school, was named the winner Tuesday at the local final of the National Reading Competition in Deurne. Fourteen school champions from groups 7 and 8 across the municipality of Deurne competed for the top spot at the cultural center, but Bo’s captivating performance ultimately won over both the audience and the judging panel.
Bo’s convincing and compelling reading style transported everyone present into the whimsical world of Roald Dahl’s The Big Pleasant Giant.

This victory earns Bo the title of ‘local reading champion’ and secures a place in the regional finals. A subsequent provincial final awaits, with the champion of North Brabant ultimately representing the province at the national final of the National Reading Competition.
The local final in Deurne was judged by Maria van Lieshout, coordinator of VoorleesExpress Deurne; Robin Verleisdonk, director of Helmond-Peel Library; and Linda Vaessen-Moonen, a Dutch teacher at de Kempel University of Applied Sciences. Loes Lemmens, a reading media coach from Helmond-Peel Library, served as the competition’s host.
