Strong Winds Disrupt Ferry Services, Trigger Yellow Alert in Western Norway
A yellow warning for strong winds has been issued for Rogaland and large portions of Western Norway, causing significant disruptions to ferry travel and prompting authorities to urge caution. Gusts of up to 40 m/s are battering the region, impacting transportation and daily life.
Severe Weather Impacts Ferry Schedules
Ferry services across the Boknafjorden have been rerouted to Hanasand instead of Mortavika since around midnight due to the hazardous weather conditions. The changes have led to reduced service frequency, with significant delays for commuters. According to a company release, the typical schedule of four ferries crossing the fjord throughout the day, departing every half hour in the morning, has been curtailed. Currently, over an hour separates departures from Arsvågen, and as of 7:30 a.m. local time, only two ferries – the “Boknafjord” and the “Bergensfjord” – are operating on the connection.
“We have not been given any time perspective on how long it will be like this,” a senior official stated, adding that a new assessment of the situation is planned for this morning. The rerouting to Hanasand further exacerbates the delays, lengthening wait times for passengers.
Ferry Cancellations and Limited Disruptions
In addition to the Boknafjorden disruptions, the ferry connection between Hjelmeland, Nesvik, and Skipavik has been completely cancelled. However, services on the Buavåg-Langevåg and Halhjem-Sandvikvåg routes are continuing to operate as scheduled.
Despite the intensity of the winds, authorities report relatively minor incidents. The Vegtrafikksentralen confirmed only one report of an overturned tree blocking Sakseidvegen in Bømlo, where passage has been restored. The Haugesund police station reported a remarkably quiet night, with duty manager Dan Magne Gaard stating, “It has been a very quiet night for the police.”
Warning Remains in Effect
The danger warning currently applies to inland areas of Rogaland, though strong winds are also being experienced along the coast. Forecasters predict the winds will not subside until 4 p.m. local time. Residents are advised to secure loose objects and exercise caution when traveling.

The situation remains fluid, and travelers are urged to check with ferry operators for the latest updates before commencing their journeys.
