The artist Bordalo II placed a giant medicine box, with the inscription “Freedom. Anti-fascist probiotic”, on top of the grave of Oliveira Salazar (1889 -1970), in the Vimieiro cemetery, municipality of Santa Comba Dão.
“Freedom is fundamental for each of us and for the well-being of all”, argues the artist in a publication made this Wednesday morning on the social network Instagram, in which he shows photographs of the artistic installation and a video of the moment in which that she was transported to the former dictator’s grave.
António de Oliveira Salazar, a major figure in the Estado Novo dictatorship, was born on April 28, 1889 in Vimieiro (Viseu district). He died on July 27, 1970, almost two years after a fall that caused a stroke and removed him from the presidency of the Government.
On the red and white box, which has a red carnation, you can also read that the “anti-fascist probiotic” is available in 50 25 mg capsules, in an allusion to the 50th anniversary of April 25, 1974, which is celebrated on Thursday -fair.
“For some reason, those who have tyrannical and anti-democratic ambitions start precisely by attacking freedom – this complex concept that crosses several areas of our lives and without which we will not have a fair society”, argues Bordalo II in the Instagram post.

And because “freedom is fundamental”, the artist leaves a warning: “We cannot be distracted and take freedom for granted. On the contrary, we have to defend it and exercise it every day. The 25th of April also serves to remind us of this”.

Bordalo II adds that “defending freedom means respecting differences, demanding universal fundamental rights and allowing the expression of free thought and creativity”.
“Art must also be free, it must be able to question, provoke and provide a starting point for reflection”, argues the artist, who ends with the phrase “April 25 always, fascism never again.”
