The statement of the NSS Reserve Officers’ Union:
“On the wave of anti-Russian sentiment, a decision was made by the RA authorities to stop the joint service of the National Security Service of the Republic of Armenia and the border guard troops of the Russian Federation at the Zvartnots airport from August 1, 2024.
The problem would probably not be a concern if the matter was exhausted. The Russian presence and role at the Zvartnots airport is insignificant due to the very low number of employees and the lack of legal tools, because all decisions regarding the service are made by the RA NSS SZ command. Therefore, the decision related to “Zvartnots” has an exclusively political context.
The policies of the current authorities and the actual situation prove that the steps to divide with Russia will continue. In other words, our cooperation will be stopped one after the other: the Russian 102nd base will be removed, as well as all four Russian border guard military units.
According to our assessment, Armenia today is not able to protect the Armenian-Turkish state border with its own forces, to keep it impregnable without the support of the Russian Federation. The reasons are more than obvious
– we don’t have enough specialized and auxiliary staff. Time and resources are needed for its preparation.
– since the days of the Soviet Union, there are engineering structures and facilities on the Armenian-Turkish border, the maintenance and maintenance of which require not only large financial costs, but also narrowly specialized personnel for these structures and facilities,
– border incidents and provocations will be inevitable in case of withdrawal of Russian forces,
– it is necessary to take into account that today Armenia has to independently ensure the protection of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border of over 1000 km.
Failure to take all this into account will definitely lead to the most serious problems of undermining the country’s security, even the loss of statehood, which is naive to not realize, and to act on purpose is a threat.”
