Shortly before his 80th birthday, former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder from Russia is receiving massive support: thousands of social media accounts are automatically posting praise for him.

The Russian “Doppelgänger” network has paid tribute to former Chancellor and Putin friend Gerhard Schröder in thousands of tweets. Since spring 2022, anti-Western and pro-Russian messages have been spread on social networks as part of a huge campaign using fake accounts in order to raise awareness in the West. It’s often about the Ukraine war – including the Schröder news.

The former SPD politician is presented as a shining role model and an important voice in similar messages on Platform X. Each of the messages has been sent to users more than a thousand times in comments. It says, for example: “Schroeder’s friendship with Putin could be a decisive factor in resolving the conflict.” Or: “Schroeder’s commitment to peace is admirable.” The name is always written there with “oe”. It is also claimed: “It is refreshing to see that a former chancellor still plays an active role in world politics.” Schröder is largely isolated due to his proximity to the Russian president.

The tweets link to text on a page titled “Broken Traffic Light.” The headline there is: “There is a chance for peace in Ukraine”. Statements by Russian leaders regularly show that the Kremlin only envisages negotiations on the condition that all territories in Ukraine conquered and occupied by Russia fall to Russia. The text concludes that “mediators should take world peace into their own hands” and the supply of arms and ammunition should be stopped.

According to group analysis @Antibot4Navalnywhich closely monitors the activity of Russian bot networks, there were at least eight different tweets, each of which was reposted at least 1,300 times by other accounts.*

The name “Broken Traffic Light” already shows as an example that the articles are not only directly about the Ukraine conflict, but also attempt to stir up conflicts in Western countries and create sentiment against the respective governments. In contributions to the network, the Wagenknecht party and the AfD are regularly praised for wanting to make politics for the German people. On another site from the network, on “Peregrine Falcon”, there was a larger report in May 2023 that the SPD’s party expulsion process against Schröder had failed.
