The Franco-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal has been elected to the prestigious French Academy, a remarkable turn of events following his release from a year-long prison sentence in Algeria. The election took place on Thursday, January 29, with Sansal receiving twenty-five votes out of twenty-six cast.
A Controversial Path to Immortality
Sansal’s journey to becoming one of the “Immortals†— as the Academy’s members are known — has been anything but conventional. He was arrested on November 16, 2024, upon arriving in Algiers from Paris and afterward sentenced to five years in prison. The charges stemmed from statements made in October 2024 to the French far-right media outlet Borders concerning Algeria and Morocco, which Algerian authorities deemed as “undermining national unity.†He was ultimately granted a pardon by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on November 12, 2025.
“Obviously I’m happy, flattered, honored, it’s huge. To become an academician is to enter the history of France,†Sansal stated on France Inter following his election.
Filling a vacancy and Joining Literary giants
At 81 years old,Sansal fills the seat number three vacancy left by the death of historian Jean-Denis Bredin in 2021. He joins a distinguished group of 35 current members, with five seats remaining open. The Academy’s ranks include prominent figures such as Amin maalouf, Jean-Christophe Rufin, sylviane Agacinski, Chantal Thomas, and Erik Orsenna.
A Celebrated,Yet Provocative,Literary Career
Sansal is a prolific author, having published around thirty novels, short story collections, and essays since 1999.He received the Grand Prix du roman from the Académie française in 2015 for his novel 2084.The End of the World (Gallimard, 2015), a work inspired by George Orwell’s 1984 and co-winner with Hédi Kaddour. His other notable works include Rue Darwin (Gallimard,2011),German village or The Diary of the Schiller Brothers (Gallimard,2008),and Live. The Countdown (Gallimard, 2024).
Prior to his election, Sansal was honored with the Cino Del Duca Global Prize on December 4, recognizing a work that embodies “a message of modern humanism.â€
The French Academy: Guardian of the Language
founded in 1635 by Cardinal Richelieu, the French Academy holds a unique position in French cultural life. Its core mission is “to give certain rules to our language and to make it pure, eloquent and capable of dealing with the arts and sciences.†The Academy is responsible for publishing a dictionary and establishing spelling regulations.
The election process itself requires an absolute majority of votes, potentially necessitating three or four rounds. If a consensus cannot be reached, the academicians can choose to continue voting or abandon the process altogether. New members are formally inducted in a private ceremony, receiving a green robe adorned with olive branches and a ceremonial sword.
Sansal’s election represents not only a personal triumph but also a complex statement about artistic freedom and the enduring power of literature in the face of political adversity.
