Nottingham Forest’s Europa League Hopes Hang by a Thread After Braga Defeat
Nottingham Forest’s aspirations for a top-eight finish in the Europa League are now firmly in doubt following a frustrating 1-0 defeat to Braga, marred by a chaotic 54-second spell that saw a penalty saved, an own goal conceded, and a player sent off. the result leaves Sean Dyche’s side needing a win in their final group stage match against Ferencvaros to have any chance of progressing.
The match in Portugal quickly descended into a nightmare for Forest, with a series of pivotal moments turning the tide decisively in Braga’s favor. Braga remarkably secured victory without registering a single shot on target,a testament to Forest’s self-inflicted wounds. This defeat marks only the second time in Europa League history a team has missed a penalty, scored an own goal, and received a red card all within the same game.
Forest had a golden prospect to seize control of the match when James McAtee was fouled inside the penalty area by Gabri Martinez. Though, Morgan Gibbs-White’s spot-kick was expertly saved by Lukas hornicek, the Braga goalkeeper. Ironically,that save mirrored Hornicek’s earlier denial of Gibbs-White’s free kick,which was the only shot on target Forest managed in a largely uneventful first half.
The momentum swiftly shifted against Forest moments later.braga launched a swift counter-attack, with Ricardo horta and Fran Navarro combining effectively. Horta’s cross into the box was met by Ryan Yates, who, under pressure, inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.
Dyche’s decision to make seven changes to the starting lineup – a tactic he also employed in the recent FA Cup loss to Wrexham – is highly likely to face scrutiny. The absence of a recognized striker, with Igor Jesus and Chris wood sidelined through injury and Taiwo Awoniyi ineligible for the competition, proved a meaningful handicap.
Despite introducing Callum Hudson-odoi and Neco Williams alongside the already substituted Elliot Anderson, Forest’s late push for an equalizer proved insufficient. Anderson’s dismissal for dissent further compounded their woes, ruling him out of the crucial upcoming fixture against Ferencvaros. A late penalty appeal, after Dan Ndoye went down in the area following a challenge from joao Moutinho, was waved away by VAR, denying Gibbs-White a chance to redeem himself.
“Very disappointing,” stated the Forest captain, Yates, following the match. “I feel we controlled most of the game. Obviously, it’s a very good team [we’re playing] away from home. I thought we stifled them. We have an opportunity to make the breakthrough. We don’t. and then, unfortunately, I make a mistake on the other end and could never get a foothold in the game after that. That’s football. I think when you get an opportunity, you don’t take it, you get punished. I have to hold my hands up, and I should have done better.”
Dyche echoed the sentiment of frustration, describing a “one minute of madness” that cost his team dearly. “One minute of madness in a game that we’ve never looked in trouble,” he explained. “We didn’t open them up as many times as we hoped. Obviously, we haven’t got a recognised center-forward, which can make it tricky. We missed a penalty,but that can happen. But then the reaction is, we’re not good enough for the next minute or so. We lose a game to what is a really poor goal.” He also noted the slow pitch conditions contributed to their struggles, adding, “We got sucked into playing a bit slow.”
Forest now face a must-win scenario against Ferencvaros to keep their Europa League campaign alive. The team will need to rediscover their attacking spark and address the defensive vulnerabilities exposed in Braga if they are to secure a positive result and salvage their european ambitions. .
