Vermont Alpine Ski Team Battles to Second Place at St. Lawrence Carnival

A strong showing from the Vermont alpine ski team at the St. Lawrence Carnival on Thursday positioned them in second place overall, with Dartmouth currently leading the competition. The Catamounts demonstrated impressive skill on the slopes of Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington, New York, setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion to the carnival.
Women’s Giant Slalom Highlights Vermont’s Performance
The women’s team spearheaded Vermont’s efforts, with Sara Stel delivering a standout performance in the giant slalom. Stel finished in fourth place, achieving a season-best time of 2:12.61 – a mere fifteen hundredths of a second shy of a podium finish. This result underscored the team’s competitive edge and potential for further success.
“Stiel’s two-run time in the GS also marks a season-best finish,” a team spokesperson noted.
Cydnie Timmermann also contributed significantly, securing 13th place with a two-run time of 2:14.25, earning valuable points for the Catamounts. Margherita Sala made her debut as a Catamount, finishing 34th with a time of 2:17.38.
Men’s Team Shows Strength in Giant Slalom
On the men’s side, Oscar Gillberg led the charge, achieving a season-best 15th place finish with a two-run time of 2:08.55. Close behind were Felix Lindenmayer, who placed 18th in 2:09.49, and Gray Flanagan, who followed in 19th with a time of 2:09.66. Sebastian Weiss also delivered a strong performance, recording his fastest two-run time of the season in the giant slalom – 2:09.91 – which earned him 22nd place.
Carnival Standings and Upcoming Events
After day one of alpine competition, Dartmouth leads the carnival with 646 total points, followed by Vermont with 625 points and New Hampshire with 574.5 points.
The alpine team will continue competing at the St. Lawrence Carnival on Friday, January 23, with the slalom race at Whiteface Mountain. The first run is estimated to begin between 9:00 and 9:30 a.m. Simultaneously, the Nordic team will begin their portion of the Colby Carnival at Sugarloaf in Kingfield, Maine. The men’s Nordic skiers will race a 20k Mass Start Skate race at 10:00 a.m., followed by the women’s 20k Mass Start Skate race at 12:00 p.m. All times are subject to change.
