In an important update on the situation of the Bran Bridge in zone 3 of Guatemala Citythe Municipality of Guatemala announced this April 29, 2024 that the structure was declared disabled.

Through a video shared on his social networks, the Mayor of Guatemala City, Ricardo Quiñonezreported that the Adolfo Mijangos López bridgewhich functioned as the main access to the colonia Branhas been declared disqualified by experts in structures and the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction -CONRED-.

This decision arises in response to the risks posed by the structure after the traffic accident that occurred on February 19, where a trailer directly impacted the bridge. At that time, the authorities shared the alternative routes to use for people who needed to travel through the area, since the passage was temporarily disabled while the corresponding evaluations were carried out. To date, you can only travel under it.

Since the accident, the relevant authorities have been working to evaluate the situation and determine the best solution. CONRED has recommended residents and drivers use alternative routes preferably to avoid congestion and unnecessary risks. Details on when construction work will begin have not yet been revealed. Demolition and construction of new structure in the Bran Colony of Guatemala City

In order to protect the safety of the people, Mayor Quiñonez indicated that it has been determined to proceed with the demolition of the bridge and the construction of a new one. It is estimated that the new work will be completed before the end of 2024.

Due to the construction of the structure, order and control measures will be established to reduce interruptions and inconveniences to the minimum possible during the construction process. The mayor highlighted that there is a commitment to carry out the works quickly and efficiently, without compromising the safety or quality of the new bridge.

A structure that connects two ports

The Adolfo Mijangos López bridge was built in 1971, as part of the Bran-Martí section of the Peripheral Ring. Amilcar Montejo, spokesperson for Emetra, reported that around 65 thousand vehicles and 3 thousand heavy transport trips pass through this place daily, because the bridge connects the Atlantic port with the Pacific.
