Brendan Sklenar Open to ‘1944’ Return as ‘Yellowstone’ Universe Expands
A potential return for Brendan Sklenar as Spencer dutton in the upcoming ‘Yellowstone’ prequel ‘1944’ remains a possibility, as the actor balances a burgeoning film career with continued ties to Taylor Sheridan’s expanding television universe. Announced in November 2024, the prequel has remained largely under wraps, leaving fans to speculate about its future and the fate of key characters like Dutton.
The future of the Dutton family saga is taking shape with multiple spinoffs on the horizon. Luke Grimes’ Kayce is slated to lead “Y: Marshals” on CBS in 2026, while plans for a series centered on Rip and Beth are also underway. However, the silence surrounding “1944” has fueled uncertainty, prompting questions about Sheridan’s commitment to the project and the potential for Sklenar’s return.
During a recent appearance on NBC’s TODAY show to promote his new film, The Housemaid, Sklenar addressed the possibility of reprising his role as Spencer Dutton. His response was keen, stating, “Yeah, it would be great. It would be great. [Laughs.] It’d be pretty cool to see me with some extra crows’ feet, and some frosted tips. Some silver-fox tips. Yeah, I’d love to do it. Age me up a little bit.” He expressed a preference for practical aging techniques, a refreshing contrast to the current Hollywood trend of digital de-aging.
Sklenar’s rising profile suggests he’s in high demand. Following his breakout role in 1923, he starred opposite Blake Lively in 2024’s It Ends with Us and has a busy 2025 slate including the tech thriller Drop, the sports drama Green and Gold, and Paul Feig’s adaptation of The Housemaid.
Adding another layer to his connection with Sheridan, Sklenar is also featured in the action-thriller F.A.S.T., penned by the Yellowstone creator. While details remain scarce, Sklenar revealed the project is “a film for Warner Bros that Taylor wrote, with the working title F.A.S.T.” He emphasized the stunt-heavy nature of the film, sharing,”I did a lot of stunts…I got to go up in a Black Hawk helicopter.” He credited his stunt double, Jake Dashnaw, who has worked with him since 1923, for handling the most dangerous sequences.
The shift of F.A.S.T. to Warner Bros.- rather than Paramount, the home of the Yellowstone franchise – is reportedly linked to Sheridan’s recent development deal with NBCUniversal. This move has raised questions about the future of projects conceived at Paramount, including “1944.” Currently, Paramount reportedly retains control over Sheridan’s earlier work.
The central question remains: has Sheridan lost interest in expanding the Yellowstone story within the Paramount framework? At this point, onyl Sheridan knows
