by ethan.brook News Editor

Brent Davelaar, a farmer and dedicated community member from rural Maurice, Iowa, died Friday, February 27, 2026, at his residence. He was 56 years vintage. His passing marks a loss for the Sioux Center and Ireton communities, where he was known for his commitment to both his agricultural work and his service within the local Christian Reformed Church. The Memorial Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Davelaar’s life was deeply rooted in the land. Born June 13, 1969, to William and Hertilda (Nobel) Davelaar in Sioux Center, he followed a path common to many in the region, embracing the challenges and rewards of farming. He attended Sioux Center Christian, Unity Christian High School and Dordt College before returning to the family farm, eventually taking over its operation in 2010 after his parents’ retirement. This transition represented not just a career move, but a continuation of a family legacy in northwest Iowa agriculture.

A Life of Faith and Service

Beyond his work on the farm, Davelaar was a devoted member of the Christian Reformed Church, actively participating in various leadership roles. He and his wife, Cindy Van Middendorp, whom he married on February 7, 1997, at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center, were initially members of Bethel, where Davelaar served as a Cadet Counselor. Later, they joined Ireton Christian Reformed Church, where he continued his work with the Cadets, also serving as a Catechism Teacher and on the Church Council. This long-standing involvement highlights his dedication to religious education and community building.

The Cadets, a program for boys focused on character development and leadership skills, held a special place in Davelaar’s heart. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to the Three Rivers Cadet Council, reflecting his passion for this youth ministry. This request speaks to his desire to continue supporting the program that shaped so many young lives.

Farming and Family

Davelaar’s interests extended beyond crops and livestock. He enjoyed raising cattle and sheep alongside his farming operations and found fulfillment in woodworking. These hobbies demonstrate a resourceful and creative spirit, complementing his practical skills as a farmer. He found joy in working with his hands and creating tangible results, whether in the fields or in his workshop.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Cindy; daughter, Jordan (Sander) Abraham and granddaughter Ruby of Alburnett, Iowa; son, Cody (Madison) Davelaar of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; his father, William Davelaar; and brothers Wendell (Rose), Dan (Sheila), and Mark (Lisa). He is also survived by brothers-in-law Loren (Sandi) and Arlo (Kristin); sisters-in-law Loann (Dave) Aardema and Carmen Van Middendorp; and numerous nieces and nephews. His family represents a wide circle of loved ones who will deeply feel his absence.

Davelaar was preceded in death by his mother, Hertilda (Herkie) Davelaar.
