Brent Faiyaz abruptly canceled the release of his highly anticipated album, Icon, just hours before it was scheduled to drop on September 19. The news surfaced through a message embedded in the video for his single, “have to,” which premiered on Halloween.
The tracklist for Icon notably excludes previously released songs “tony soprano” and “peter pan.” A diverse roster of producers contributed to the album, including Chad Hugo, Paperboy Fabe, Dpat, Dilip, tommy Richman, L3gion, and Benny Blanco.
The cancellation stemmed from a dispute with his record label, Atlantic Records, over TikTok royalties. Faiyaz claimed the label was unwilling to clear samples necessary for the album’s release on the platform, hindering promotional opportunities crucial for reaching a wider audience. He detailed the issue in a series of now-deleted Instagram stories,alleging Atlantic was prioritizing its own financial gain over his artistic vision.
Faiyaz, born Christopher Brent Wood, is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He gained prominence with his 2016 EP, A.M. Paradox, and has as released two studio albums, Sonder Son (2018) and Wasteland (2022). His music blends elements of R&B, soul, and alternative music, often characterized by introspective lyrics and atmospheric production.
The situation escalated publicly when Faiyaz announced he would no longer be releasing music through Atlantic Records. He requested to be released from his contract, expressing frustration with the label’s policies and lack of support for his artistic endeavors. He further stated his intention to remain independent, regaining full ownership of his music.
As of November 3, 2023, faiyaz and Atlantic Records reached an agreement. the label agreed to release him from his contract, granting him full ownership of his masters and publishing rights. Faiyaz confirmed the resolution on social media, thanking his fans for their support and expressing relief at finaly being free from the contractual obligations.
Icon remains unreleased. while Faiyaz has not announced any immediate plans to release the album, he has indicated a desire to revisit the project once he has established a new independent infrastructure. The dispute serves as a prominent example of the ongoing tensions between artists and record labels in the evolving music industry.
