Bristol Metrobus Extension: £3.6m Project Approved

Bristol’s M1 Bus Route Expansion Approved with £3.6 Million Investment

A significant upgrade to Bristol’s public transportation network is underway, with approval granted for a £3.6 million expansion of the M1 bus route and accompanying improvements for cyclists and pedestrians. The project, spearheaded by Bristol City Council, aims to enhance connectivity and promote sustainable transport options throughout the city.

The approved plans will extend the M1 bus service to three new locations in south Bristol – William Jessop Way, Hawkfield Road, and Imperial Retail Park – and modernize six existing bus stops with new shelters and real-time information displays. This investment signals a commitment to improving the overall passenger experience and accessibility of public transit.

Boosting Bristol’s Bus Network

According to a statement from a senior official, “Together we’re beginning to build the bus network that people across our region deserve.” The M1 bus currently operates north to south, connecting Cribbs Causeway and Hengrove Park with frequent service – every 10 minutes during peak hours. The extension will broaden the route’s reach, providing crucial links to key employment and retail areas.

The project isn’t limited to bus service improvements. A new two-way segregated cycleway will be constructed along Hawkfield Road, extending to Hartcliffe Way, and traffic calming measures will be implemented to enhance safety for all road users. Upgraded pedestrian crossings are also planned for key intersections, including Whitchurch Lane and William Jessop Way, as well as Briscoes Avenue, Butterfly Lane, and Fulford Road with Hawkfield Road.

Funding and Local Support

The initiative is being funded through the government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement for the West of England, a fund secured by the West of England Combined Authority. Bristol City Council will contribute an additional £260,000 to support the scheme and ongoing bus services.

Local leaders have voiced strong support for the project. A council leader remarked, “This is a good example of how we can use Bristol’s proportion of the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement, working with the Mayoral Combined Authority, to improve sustainable transport links across Bristol.” A local Member of Parliament added, “I welcome the additional bus provision for my constituents with the extension of the M1 to Imperial Park.”

The investment underscores a broader regional strategy to prioritize public transportation and active travel, fostering a more connected and environmentally friendly city. The project is expected to be completed in [Date Placeholder – Completion Date Needed] and will significantly improve transport options for residents and visitors alike.
