Cali: Bilingualism, Art & Cultural Transformation

Colombian School’s Language Festival Amplifies Bilingualism and Global Opportunities for students

A vibrant party of linguistic diversity and cultural exchange, the XVI Festival of the Song in Foreign Languages concluded on October 6, 2025, in Santiago de Cali, Colombia, showcasing the power of education to unlock a world of possibilities for young people.

The annual event, hosted by the IEO, INEM Jorge Isaacs de Cali, has evolved from a classroom exercise into a cornerstone of the institution’s commitment to bilingualism and preparing students for a globalized world. More than 500 attendees – students, teachers, families, and representatives from allied cultural centers – witnessed performances in English, French, and German, highlighting the students’ dedication and the school’s impactful language programs.

A Stage for Cultural Expression

The festival’s core mission is to demonstrate that language learning extends far beyond grammar rules. It’s about embracing culture, interpreting artistic expression, and building pathways to new opportunities. Students from both high school and middle school participated, showcasing their linguistic skills through song.

This year’s winners included:

  • English: 1st place – Luciana Camargo (6-6), 2nd place – Sebastián López (10-4)

Partnerships Fueling Student Success

The success of the festival is underpinned by strong partnerships with institutions like the Colombo American and german Colombo Cultural Centers, and the french Alliance. These organizations provide crucial support in the form of scholarships and internationally recognized certifications, expanding access to global opportunities for students.

One student, isabela Gómez, a student in grade 11, shared her gratitude, stating, “Thanks to INEM I had access to the scholarship of the Pash initiative of the Goethe Institute to study German. This opportunity allowed me to prepare for my dream of studying nursing in Germany. I am very grateful as normally one does not know these scholarships and the institution opened that door.”

Beyond the Classroom: Inspiring Future Leaders

The festival’s impact extends beyond academic achievement, fostering a broader vision of global citizenship. Santiago Banguero, another 11th-grade student, emphasized the event’s influence on his academic path. “This event fulfills its sixteenth version and for me it has been very significant. From ninth it motivated me to choose the language modality…and this opened my vision to other cultures,” he explained, adding that he aspires to study in Canada and Germany.

Representatives from the Bridge Institute further underscored the school’s commitment to quality bilingual education. According to a representative, the INEM is “an example of how a public school can lead a public school high quality bilingualism,” and the institute annually certifies approximately 20 students in German, with one receiving a three-week scholarship to Germany. They also promote the Dual Training Pash program in Nursing.

A Catalyst for Regional Development

The XVI Song festival in Foreign Languages 2025 is more than just a school event; it’s a testament to the transformative power of education and a contributing factor to the revitalization of Cali. The collaborative efforts of the ministry of Education, the IEO, strategic allies, and the students themselves demonstrate that investing in education is an investment in the future.

As a senior official noted, “This festival is iconic for our institution that today is part of the inemitition to the world and globalization.” In each performance, each award, and each scholarship, a powerful message resonates: education is the bridge to hope and progress.
