The British government wants to gradually increase its defense budget by 2030. Ukraine should also be further strengthened.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced in Warsaw an increase in British defense spending and new military aid for Ukraine. Britain will gradually increase its defense spending to 2.5 percent of gross domestic product by 2030 in view of the global threat, Sunak said on Tuesday during a visit to the Polish capital. According to Sunak, it is the “most comprehensive strengthening of national defense in a generation”.
The Prime Minister also announced that Great Britain would support Ukraine in its war against Russia with additional military aid worth 500 million pounds (almost 580 million euros). Sunak met Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Warsaw for talks about Ukraine and the security situation in Europe.
“Defending Ukraine against Russia’s brutal ambitions is vital to our security and to all of Europe,” Sunak said before his trip. If Russian President Vladimir Putin is successful, “he will not stop at the Polish border.” After his visit to Warsaw, Sunak wanted to travel on to Germany, where he will meet Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) in Berlin on Wednesday.
