BTS ‘Arirang’: Album Details, Tour Dates & Comeback Explained

After a five-and-a-half-year pause—shaped by individual solo projects and mandatory military service—BTS is back. The globally renowned South Korean group released their fifth studio album, Arirang, on Friday, marking a significant moment for both the band and their devoted fanbase, known as ARMY. The arrival of Arirang isn’t just an album launch; it’s the kickoff to a multifaceted return that includes live performances, a documentary, and an extensive world tour.

The 14-track record is already generating excitement, accompanied by the release of a video for the song “Swim.” Fans will have the opportunity to see BTS perform live at a free concert in Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square on March 21, an event that will be livestreamed on Netflix. Just two days later, on March 23, the group will make their first U.S. Performance in nearly four years at a special Spotify event, Spotify x BTS: SWIMSIDE, in New York City, limited to 1,000 fans. A behind-the-scenes look at their return will be offered in the Netflix documentary, BTS: The Return, premiering on March 27.

A Return Forged in Collaboration and Personal Growth

The creation of Arirang involved a unique period of collaboration. RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook spent two months living together in Los Angeles, a first for the group since 2019. This shared living experience fostered a creative environment that drew in a diverse range of producers and songwriters, including Pdogg, Diplo, Kevin Parker of Tame Impala, Flume, JPEGMAFIA, Mike WiLL Made-It, Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, El Guincho, and Teezo Touchdown. The album’s title itself, Arirang, is a nod to a beloved Korean folk song, reflecting a deep connection to their heritage.

The time apart, necessitated by mandatory military service, proved to be a period of reflection and growth for each member. Jung Kook shared with Rolling Stone UK, “During my time in the military, I couldn’t work on music even when I wanted to…That built up a sense of longing. It made me seek to do better and deliver something great.” This sentiment is echoed by J-Hope, who told the Zach Sang Display last year, “In order to make music as a team in a healthy way…we each go through personal growth and growing pains…These experiences will fill us with new strength and energy.”

An 82-Date Global Tour Commences

The release of Arirang is just the beginning. On April 9, BTS will embark on an ambitious 82-date world tour, scheduled to continue through March 2027. The tour will span 34 cities across 23 countries, marking a significant return to live performances after their hiatus. Fans will have opportunities to experience the tour not only in person but also through live viewings of concerts in Goyang, South Korea (April 11) and Tokyo (April 18), officially titled BTS World Tour ‘Arirang’ Live Viewing.

The Meaning Behind ‘Arirang’

BTS has described Arirang as a deeply personal project. In a statement, the group explained that they drew inspiration from the emotional resonance of the traditional Korean song “Arirang”—its themes of yearning, longing, and the cyclical nature of life—to create an album that explores universal emotions. They believe the new release will “resonate with the worldwide audience as a timeless legacy across generations and cultures.”
