Phillip Island, Australia – Nicolò Bulega has set the pace at the WorldSBK pre-season test at Phillip Island, signaling his intent to dominate the 2026 season. The Italian rider, entering his first full season with Ducati, expressed a calm confidence despite being the clear favorite, a sentiment stemming from a shift in perspective after struggling in previous championships. The focus now is on refining the new Panigale V4 and capitalizing on a stable team environment as the WorldSBK championship prepares for its first round at the iconic Australian circuit.

Bulega’s strong performance during the two-day test has already turned heads, with many in the paddock acknowledging him as the rider to beat. However, the 28-year-classic downplayed any pressure, stating that he felt more pressure when fighting to improve from lower positions in Moto2. “I felt the pressure when in Moto2 I was fifteenth and I had to improve,” Bulega said. “Now I am at the front and I am relaxed. I don’t see why I should be under pressure. I think I have done a great job together with my team and I am ready for the races.” This shift in mindset, coupled with a strong connection with his team, appears to be a key factor in his current form.

New Machine, Familiar Foundation

While pleased with the initial performance of the new Panigale, Bulega acknowledged there’s still work to be done. He and his team spent the test sessions identifying areas for improvement, but ultimately found that sticking with a proven setup yielded the best results. “This morning we tried some things in an attempt to improve, but we didn’t succeed,” he explained. “At that point I told my Chief Technician not to look for new solutions but to return to the setup that had worked well yesterday. We did that and we went fast again. Sometimes trying to refine the bike risks losing the right path. Better to consolidate the strengths.” This pragmatic approach highlights Bulega’s focus on maximizing the potential of the current package before chasing marginal gains.

The transition to a new motorcycle always presents challenges, and Bulega noted that the 2026 Panigale differs from its predecessor in several ways. “In some aspects It’s better and in others not,” he admitted. “It’s new and therefore we necessitate to get to grasp it better to exploit all its positive sides. We can improve it and we will do so in the next rounds.” The team’s ability to quickly adapt and refine the new machine will be crucial as the season progresses.

Rivalry and Team Dynamics

Bulega also touched on his relationship with his new teammate, acknowledging a positive dynamic. “It’s good. But I also got on well with Bautista,” he said, referring to his predecessor. “I don’t look much at the other side of the box. Of course, we compare our data, but everyone does their own job.” This collaborative yet independent approach suggests a healthy team environment, allowing both riders to focus on maximizing their individual performance.

The WorldSBK grid has seen significant changes during the off-season, with several riders switching teams and manufacturers. Bulega observed that many of his rivals are still adapting to their new surroundings. “I haven’t seen them much. Danilo [Petrucci] I never crossed, while Oliveira I crossed in some points of the track,” he said. “I think not all my rivals are currently at 100% as many have changed bikes, or teams, some have changed the Chief Technician and they need time, but soon they will be. For me, however, the team has not changed, I know everyone very well and I know how to work with my technicians. This has also facilitated the development of the new bike.”

Equipment and Preparation

A minor concern regarding his helmet situation was also addressed. Bulega is awaiting delivery of FIM2-homologated helmets from KYT, but assured fans that he will have a solution in place for the races. “I am in contact with KYT to receive the FIM2 homologated helmets, but if this is not the case we will locate an alternative solution. But rest assured that I will race.” This proactive approach demonstrates Bulega’s commitment to being fully prepared for the season opener.

The 2026 WorldSBK season is poised to be a competitive one, and Nicolò Bulega is clearly entering it as a frontrunner. His calm demeanor, combined with a strong team and a rapidly developing machine, suggest he is well-equipped to challenge for the championship. The first race weekend at Phillip Island will be a crucial test of his potential, and fans eagerly await to see if he can translate his pre-season form into race-winning results. The official WorldSBK website will provide live timing, race results, and further updates throughout the season.

The opening round of the 2026 WorldSBK season at Phillip Island is scheduled for February 20-22.
