The toll from a road accident on Saturday in Nicaragua is particularly heavy. At least 19 people died, including ten children, and around 40 were injured when a bus overturned on a highway, authorities announced.
The accident occurred near Rancho Grande, a town in the department of Matagalpa, north of the capital Managua, according to the Nicaraguan government website, El 19 Digital, which cites data from the Ministry of Health. The ten children who died were between 4 and 16 years old.
The driver arrested
Authorities said the vehicle was exceeding speed limits, while police arrested the driver as he tried to flee. “We are moved, we fully share (…) the pain of these families and we call for more severity in the application of laws for these means of transport,” declared Rosario Murillo, the wife of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, on the official Canal 4 television channel. The driver apparently lost control of the vehicle which was carrying around 70 people and then “overturned” on a bridge, she said.
In images broadcast by the media, the yellow bus is embedded in one of the metal ramps of this structure and bodies are on the roadway of the highway.
