At least 35 people were killed and at least 71 were injured when a bus carrying worshipers to an Easter church in Zimbabwe veered off the road and landed in a valley, police said.

A bus crashed Thursday night in the southeastern city of Chiping, Zimbabwe.

The bus picked up members of the local Zion Christian Church who were traveling to the Easter meeting in Chipping.

“Signs indicate the bus was overloaded,” he said. Buses in Zimbabwe carry an average of 60 to 75 passengers.

Road accidents often occur in Zimbabwe during public holidays, and the roads are often congested. Many roads have potholes, which are a major cause of accidents.
